How to obtain the Z value in gphistogram by using a max file?

Post by wcf223 »

Dear Marc,
I have a question about the display after opening a .max (obtained by f-k method) file in gphistogram.
Are the Z-axis values (X is frequency, Y is velocity, and Z? with different colors) based on some statistic? May I know how to calculate the Z-axis values from a .max file? Thanks a lot!

Hi Cheng-Feng,

The Z axis is the probability density function at each frequency. When playing with the horizontal scroll bar on the left you can change the current frequency displayed in the bottom right plots (density and cumulative probability). From the arithmetic operations it is just the counting of velocity measurements in each class. The number are then normalized to provide unitary integral.

Hi, Marc,
Thank you for the detailed explanations. I will try to reproduce the picture by myself. If I meet any problems, I will discuss with you. :D

Dear Marc,
Based on your explanation, I understand that the graphical display of f-k results uses a probability density function (pdf). But I don't know how to link the pdf with its filled color. A larger pdf doesn’t necessarily seem to mean darker colors. Could you please teach me how Geopsy calculates the color? Thank you!

Dear Ying-Chi,

You can access the colour scale in the properties of the graph (double click or right-click, context menu, Properties). In the properties, under tab "Layers", you will find the colour scale that you can eventually edit. To show the plot with its colour scale for a paper figure, you can save the graph as a .page file or copy it to clipboard (see context menu over the axis, not the same as on the contents). Run figue and open the .page file or paste the graph. Add a new colour scale (see toolbar). In the graph properties save the colour scale as a .pal file. In the properties of the new colour scale load the .pal file. The two colour scales are not linked. If you modify one of the two, you have to update the other. If you have several graphs on your sheet, all sharing the same colour scale, by selecting all graphs together, you can modify the colour scales in a single operation. The new colour scales you added has still to be modified separately.
If this is unclear, feel free to ask for more details, or snapshots which are sometimes clearer.
Best regards,
Marc
